Liepaja port sees cargo turnover rise 24.4% in January-August

During the first eight months of 2017, the stevedore companies based in the southwestern Latvian port of Liepaja reloaded 4.170 million tons of cargo in total, which was a 24.4% rise from the same period a year ago, Liga Ratniece-Kadege, a spokeswoman for the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ), told LETA.
In the first eight months of this year Liepaja port also served 929 ships
and 27,689 passengers.
In August, Liepaja port reloaded 495,524 tons of cargo, up 50.6% from last
August.
Bulk cargos – grain and grain products, coal, construction materials,
mineral fertilizers, woodchip – ensured 69.5% of all cargos, general cargos
formed 22.2%, and liquid cargos formed 8.3%.
Ekers Stividors LP demonstrated the largest cargo turnover in August – by
151.2% to 178,073 tons. The second largest turnover was for Liepaja Bulk
Terminal – 118,835 tons, down 8.9% year-on-year.
Terrabalt that also serves Stena Line ferries five times a week, in August
reloaded 77,520 tons of cargo.
