The Lithuanian seaport of Klaipeda handled 27.631 million tons of cargo in January through August 2017, a rise of 4.6%, from 26.418 million tons, a year ago, the port's authority informed LETA/BNS.

In August alone, cargo traffic through the port increased by 13.2% year-on-year to 3.611 million tons.

"We had a very good month in August. The handling of oil products is recovering, which gives substantial hope, and we expect the loading operations to fully go back to last year's level this year. Fluctuations of general cargo have been observed due to a decline in the volume of metal products and raw materials at the Klaipeda port," the port's CEO Arvydas Vaitkus told a news conference on September 11th.

In his words, the cargo handling results do not reflect the loading of grains, as the loading of these products should increase in September.

Liquid cargo volumes fell by 7.2% to 7.5 million tons in the first eight months of 2017 year-on-year, while general cargo volumes went down by 2.3% to nearly 8 million tons and bulk cargo volumes jumped by 19.5% to 12.1 million tons.
