Reconstruction of the Riga Central Railway Station will be held in line with the design by Danish architects - PLH Arkitekter A/S in cooperation with COWI A/S, said Agnis Driksna, the development and cooperation department director of Eiropas Dzelzcela Linijas, a company involved in Rail Baltica project.

Today the ceremony was held to award winners of the tender for designs of Rail Baltica Riga railway bridge and Riga central multimodal public transportation hub. The tender was held from July 7 until November 7, 2016. An international jury decided to award EUR 45,000 to two second places, three recognition awards (EUR 13,000) and one promotion award (EUR 21,000).

Among award winners there were architects from Spain, France, Denmark, Estonia and Latvia.

Driksna said that a decision has been made to use the Danish design for the project. A procurement will soon be announced on the technical design and construction works, while the actual works could be started in 2019.

The Rail Baltica project seeks to re-establish a direct connection between the Baltic states and the European railway network. The project is expected to facilitate regional integration by means of a railway link from Helsinki that would link Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas, Warsaw and Berlin and might potentially be extended to Venice. The EU will help finance the project from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for development of transport infrastructure.
