The freight terminals of Transiidikeskuse AS handled 255,916 tons of cargoes in January, 18 percent more than in the same month in 2016, writes LETA/BNS.

The Muuga container terminal of Transiidikeskuse AS handled 18,878 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of containers, 25.3% more than in the same month a year ago. The tonnage of goods transported in containeres increased 19.8%, the company said on Thursday.

"The increase in container turnover is augmented by increases in both Estonian exports and Russian imports. Demand for consumer goods is again on the uptrend in Russia, the strengthening of the rouble and rising price of oil are giving additional momentum to it," Transiidikeskuse AS CEO Erik Laidvee said.

The general goods terminal of Transiidikeskuse AS handled 51,801 tons of piece goods and bulk goods in January, 11.3% more than in January last year.

Transiidikeskus is working actively toward achieving an increase in north-south freight flows in addition to the traditional west-east flows. "We have met with the participants in this chain, there's a lot of interest and the first letters of intent have been signed with cooperation partners too," Laidvee said.

Transiidikeskus is a specialized container and general goods operator in the harbor of Muuga just outside Tallinn.
