Mobile operators ready for launch of eCall system in Latvia

BC, Riga, 10.01.2017.Print version
Latvia's mobile telecommunications operators have prepared their networks for the launch of an automatic emergency call system or the so called eCall, reports LETA.

Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) and Tele2 completed their preparations for the launch of the eCall technology already at the beginning of last year, and Bite finished the preparations at the end of 2016.

Bite representatives said earlier that adjusting the mobile operator's network to the eCall technology might cost an estimated EUR 20,000-30,000. Tele2 spent over EUR 20,000 on this purpose, but LMT declined to disclose the amount of money spent on the emergency calls system.

As reported, in case of a crash, an eCall-equipped car automatically calls the nearest emergency center. The eCall technology is being introduced in line with an EU regulation. The system is supposed to start working in Latvia as of March 1, 2017.

eCall will be mandatory in all new cars sold within EU after April 2018.
