The state owned company Port of Tallinn has completed Phase One of the Twin Port joint infrastructure development project of the ports of Helsinki and Tallinn, reports LETA/BNS.

85% of the works planned under Twin Port 1 were performed by the end of the financing period.

"The aim of the Twin Port project for Port of Tallinn was to increase the throughput capacity and effectiveness of the terminal areas and connections with the city of the Old City Harbor in Tallinn by means of work to introduce a new traffic arrangement in the Old City Harbor, reconstruction of quays and construction of new access ramps. The projected works were not completed to the extent of 15% as at December 31, the end of the project's financing period. Specifically, this had to do with traffic solutions in the vicinity of terminals A and D," Hele-Mai Metsal, head of the infrastructure development department at the port company, said.

The total cost of the project was 8.9 mln euros, of which EU support made up 1.8 mln euros.

Under the next similar project, Twin Port 2, which is also co-financed by the EU, the port company is planning to extend the D terminal of the Old City Harbor and build a parking building next to it, as well as build a pedestrian bridge between the terminals A and D across the Admiralty Inlet. The company has already built a wastewater acceptance facility that will enable it to increase the rate of acceptance of wastewater from ships by 100 cubic meters to up to 1,200 cubic meters per hour next year.

The total investment of Port of Tallinn under the project is 17.6 mln euros.
