he Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, which has in the past three years stood out in the Eastern Baltic Sea region for its cargo traffic growth, expects to keep growing next year and plans to expand its infrastructure to double its annual tonnage to 80 million tons in 2025, LETA/BNS writes according to the daily Lietuvos Zinios reported on Friday.

"Work will begin to on the outer channel to turn the port's northern breakwater to a different angle. This will allow us to compete at a global level, because our aim is to be able to accept all of the largest ships that can enter the Baltic Sea," it quoted Arvydas Vaitkus, director of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, as saying.

"We can compete with other ports with somewhat worse infrastructure. Thus, if we improved it somewhat, we could reach an annual tonnage of 70 mln to 80 mln tons in around 2025," he said.

The port's four-year strategic plan envisages investing 405 mln euros.

Klaipeda was the second-fastest growing port after Russia's Primorsk in the Eastern Baltic Sea region in January through October and has held onto its position as the number-one port in the three Baltic countries since the start of the year.
