NATO warships to welcome visitors in Riga port on Latvia's Independence Day

ust like last year, NATO warships moored in Riga port will welcome visitors on Latvia's Independence Day this weekend, LETA was told at the Defense Ministry.

On November 18 and 19, visitors will be welcome aboard vessels of the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1). The group currently includes ships of eight countries: the Latvian minesweeper Imanta, the Elbe of Germany, the Skalvys of Lithuania, the Sakala of Estonia, the Grimsby of the UK, the Willemstad of the Netherlands, the Narcis of Belgium and a Norwegian minesweeper.


The Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1, led by Commander Johan-Elias Seljamaa, arrived in Riga on Thursday, November and will stay at the port until Monday morning.


The group has started a mine clearance operation in which the vessels search and destroy unexploded ordnance that has been left in the Baltic Sea after World War II.


Ships of the Latvian Naval Forces Flotilla will also be open to the public in Riga Passenger Port on November 18.
