First airBaltic test flight to Liepaja planned for December

BC, Riga, 16.11.2016.Print version
National airline airBaltic is planning to perform the first test flight to Liepaja on December 5, and will consider the option of resuming regular flights between Riga and Liepaja, Transport Minister Uldis Augulis (Greens/Farmers) said during the government's meeting in Liepaja today.

In addition, development of the Liepaja Port has been very steady, and this year the port posted the smallest reduction in cargo turnover as compared to Ventspils and Riga, said Augulis.

He went on to say that renovation of Riga-Liepaja roads would soon be completed, adding that Liepaja-Nica road was yet to be repaired.

The Transport Ministry's report on transport infrastructure development in Liepaja and Kurzeme province, presented during the government's meeting today, emphasizes importance of infrastructure projects for the development of Liepaja and Kurzeme, and the important role of the Liepaja Airport.

Infrastructure upgrades were completed at the Liepaja Airport last year, and on September 19 this year the airport was certified for serving regular flights.

Liepaja Airport is the first airport in Latvia and one of the first in Europe to be certified according to the European Union's new regulations on certification of airfields. This is an important step in the development of regional airports, says the report.
