Eesti Post, the state owned Estonian postal company doing business under the Omniva name, has opened a new logistics terminal in Lithuania's second biggest city Kaunas, reports LETA/BNS.

"Relocating to bigger premises was a must. Otherwise we would not have been able to cope with the year-end parcel volumes that will probably hit a new high again," said Sten Argos, head of parcel operations at Eesti Post.

The terminal situated in the northeastern part of Kaunas is more favorably located logistically and can handle several times the amount of parcels the previous terminal was able to do. Its floor area is more than double the floor area of the old terminal.

Argos said that in the middle of this summer the Lithuanian business unit of Eesti Post reached the milestone where one mln parcels had been delivered to parcel machines in Lithuania.

Eesti Post started off with 12 parcel machines in Lithuania in 2011 and at present 67 out of the company's 276 parcel machines are situated in that country.

The Lithuanian unit of Eesti Post turned five this year and keeps growing, Argos said. "By the beginning of August we had delivered one-third more private customer parcels in Lithuania than during the whole of last year."

Eesti Post also says that its Lithuanian business, Omniva UAB, the fourth biggest logistics company in Lithuania, has increased its market share faster than any of its competitors in that market.
