Estonian Akso-Haus exported to Germany over 60 houses for refugees
Those 60 buildings are actually just a trial batch and the company's aim is considerably bigger, member of the management board Andres Samaruutel told BNS. "Our aim is to sell in Europe a couple thousand buildings for refugees, including schools and child care centers. Negotiations are in progress but there are no contracts as yet," he said.
A house for refugees has an average size of 24 square meters comprising living quarters, a kitchen facility and a shower compartment. Samaruutel is currently in Germany to inspect the first houses installed there and check how things work. "If necessary, we'll make adjustments and give advice," he added.
Building houses for refugees in Europe, first of all in Germany, represents a significant opportunity for all Estonian wooden house manufacturers, Samaruutel said, explaining that it's a big market where there still should be enough room.
Akso-Haus has since the start of the refugee crisis substantially increased its production capacity and invested 2.5 million euros in expansion. The company has moved from a 3,500 square meter production facility into one of 10,000 square meters and is renting another of the same size. "Furthermore, we already have 100 workers and the plan is to hire another 100 in the near future," the board member remarked.
The company based at Iru near Tallinn more than quadrupled revenue to 5.4 million euros and made a profit of 158,441 euros in the previous business year. Akso-Haus is owned by Grato Holding OU.
