In Q1, the number of tourists in Lithuanian hotels grew by 12.2%

According to the provisional data of Statistics Lithuania, in I quarter 2016, accommodation establishments received 468.8 thousand guests, or by 12.2% more than in the same quarter of 2015. The number of tourists from the EU countries totalled 119.6 thousand (by 12.9% more than in the same quarter of 2015), from non-EU countries – 114 thousand (by 10.1per cent more).

The number of Lithuania's residents accommodated grew by 12.9% and totalled 235.3 thousand.

 

The majority of foreign tourists were from Belarus – 36 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 32.5 thousand), Russia – 34.2 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 34 thousand), Latvia – 24.7 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 19.8 thousand), Poland – 21.4 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 19.4 thousand), Ukraine – 17.8 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 12.4 thousand), Germany – 13.4 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 13.1 thousand), the United  Kingdom – 9.3 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 8.8 thousand), Estonia – 8.4 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 8.3 thousand) and  Norway – 6.9 thousand (in I quarter 2015, 7.8 thousand). More than half of foreign tourists – 59.7% – stayed in Vilnius.



 

Almost a third (28.64%) of tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of resort towns: Druskininkai – 81.6 thousand (by 18.6% more than in the same quarter of 2015), Palanga – 34.4 thousand (by 19.2% more), Birštonas – 16.4 thousand (by 32.5% more). Meanwhile, Neringa accommodated by 6.6% fewer guests (1.4 thousand).

In I quarter 2016, hotels and motels accommodated 381.9 thousand tourists, or by 9.9% more than in the same quarter of 2015; the number of foreign tourists amounted to 203.2 thousand, or by 10.1% more. The number of hotel and motel rooms and beds in the country remained the same as in I quarter 2015 –13.5 and 27.7 thousand respectively. The hotel and motel room and bed occupancy rates stood at 40 and 29.4% respectively (in I quarter 2015, at 38.4 and 27.1%).

 

In I quarter 2016, Vilnius hotels and motels accommodated 158.7 thousand tourists, which is by 2.5% more than in I quarter 2015; the number of foreign tourists amounted to 123.8 thousand, or by 3% more.

Concepts

Accommodation establishment refers to a local kind-of-activity unit providing paid short-stay accommodation services and facilities to satisfy overnight accommodation and hygienic needs.

 

Number of tourists accommodated includes Lithuanian residents and foreign visitors with at least one overnight stay in an accommodation establishment.
