Estonia's wood pellet exports soar 87% in January y-o-y

Estonian enterprises exported 15.8 million euros' worth of wood pellets in January 2016, which is 87.2% more than during the same month a year earlier, while overall exports of wood products declined by 2.1%, data of Statistics Estonia show, cites LETA/BNS.

Wood pellet sales grew in all major target markets, in the first place Sweden and the UK, with exports to those countries totaling respectively 4.1 million and 2 million euros. Sales on the Danish market amounted to 7.7 million euros, the statistical office said.

 

The export of the biggest product group, sawn and planed timber, meanwhile fell 3.3% to 25.5 million euros. Exports of wooden furniture shrank 17.7% to 17.1 million euros and the export of building elements decreased 20.4% to 13.6 million euros. The biggest decline was registered in the export of unbleached paper.

 

All told, 141.3 million euros' worth of wood products was exported in January, which marks a year-on-year drop of 2.1%.

 

Statistics Estonia notes at the same time that wood products are the most important foreign trade balancer. Compared to the first month of 2015, the deficit of Estonia's foreign trade has soared 272.6% to 158 million euros.

 

Wood product imports totaled 39.2 million euros in January, down by 9.8% in annual comparison.
