Lemminkainen to renovate, expand Tallinn Airport airside area

BC, Tallinn, 10.03.2016.Print version
The listed Finnish construction group Lemminkainen and Tallinn Airport have signed an agreement on repair and expansion work of the airside area at Tallinn Airport. The value of the project is approximately 34.6 million euros, informs LETA/BNS.

Construction will begin immediately and the contract will be completed in November 2017, Lemminkainen said on March 9th.

The contract covers both the planning and the execution of the project, including earthworks and paving along with the reconstruction of storm water systems, as well as the renewal of airport technology, such as airfield ground lighting and navigation systems

The paved areas of the airport's airside area will be expanded by 73,490 square meters and the foundation of the existing strip area will be reinforced. Lemminkainen will also build service roads, areas for snow disposal and de-icing treatment, testing sites for aircraft engines, fire exercise and maneuvering area for airfield maintenance equipment, as well as concrete pavings and apron stands in the airside area.

The most demanding work will involve renewal of the entire paved surface of the runway. It is estimated that 71,000 tons of asphalt will be needed and the earthworks will go as deep as 2.5 meters.

"With this project, we will improve the safety of the airport and prepare for an increase in air traffic in the coming decades," Einari Bambus, member of the board at Tallinn Airport, said. "It's worthwhile to note that Lemminkainen was the company that renewed the runway at Tallinn Airport during 1994–1995, and the runway has remained in an excellent condition for over 20 years," Bambus added.

"Airports are challenging locations due to safety regulations and the need to ensure smooth traffic during the project, among other things. With regard to paving, there are strict density, stability and wear resistance requirements and we have extensive experience in meeting these requirements at Nordic airports," said Robert Blumberg, executive vice president at Lemminkainen.

Spokespeople for the state-owned airport company told BNS in May last year that the airport's facilities are to be reconstructed for 50 million euros and the works are to be completed in the first half of 2018, in time for the Estonian presidency of the European Union.

Lemminkainen Corporation had net sales of 1.9 billion in 2015. The company's shares are quoted on Nasdaq Helsinki.
