DFDS Seaways brings in larger ferry for carrying Russian trucks to Germany

BC, Vilnius, 12.02.2016.Print version
With approximately 90 Russian trucks still queueing at the International Ferry Terminal in Klaipeda, DFDS Seaways, a Lithuanian ferry operator that is part of the Danish shipping group DFDS, has brought in a larger ferry so as to speed up the transport of trucks to Germany, reports LETA/BNS.

“The situation has improved. Yesterday, we put across 64 trucks as demand for Thursday sailings is usually weaker. Now all trucks are waiting at the International Ferry Terminal. There’re approximately 90 of them. The larger vessel came from Sweden earlier today and boarding will start soon,” Vaidas Klumbys, spokesman for DFDS Seaways, told BNS on Friday.

The company had swapped the ferries used on routes to Sweden and Germany, he said, adding that the larger ferry would continue to travel between Klaipeda and Germany until mid-March.

The trucks currently staying at the terminal should be put across by Monday.

The smaller ferry, which, until now, used to sail between Klaipeda and Kiel, Germany, is able to accommodate approximately 120 trucks whereas the larger ferry, which used to travel between Klaipeda and Karlshamn, Sweden, can accommodate about 150 trucks.

Truck congestion at the ferry terminal was triggered by deadlock in talks on new bilateral haulage permits between Poland and Russia, which prompted Russian trucks to bypass Poland on their way to Germany.
