Cargo turnover at Liepaja port in January rose by 8.6% y-o-y

There were 477,820 tons of cargo reloaded at the Liepaja port in south-western Latvia in January this year, which is a growth by 8.6% from January 2015 and also by 2.2% more than the monthly average in 2015, said Liga Ratniece-Kadege, a representative of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ), cites LETA.

The Liepaja port served 111 ships and 2,328 inbound and outbound passengers in January 2016.


Bulk cargos prevailed in the cargo turnover at the Liepaja port in January this year, accounting for 70% or 334,600 tons, most of which 258,400 tons were grain.

 

General cargos made up 20% or 96,000 tons, and liquid cargos amounted to 10% or 47,200 tons in January 2016, a slight increase from 2015 when the average monthly amount of liquid cargos was 30,000 tons.

 

Of the stevedores operating at the Liepaja port, Liepaja Bulk Terminal reloaded the largest amount of cargos in January this year or 198,443 tons, mostly grain. Ekers Stividors LP was in the second place with 106,019 tons at a 56.6% rise and expects further growth this year with annual cargo turnover planned at 1.34 million tons.

 

January 2016 was good also for DG Terminals which reloaded 31,007 tons or by 185.6% more year-on-year. The company's board member, Janis Millers, said the terminal's performance depended on the situation in the global market and ability to adapt to reloading of different products.

 

Liquid cargo terminals Transit Terminal and GI Terminals, as well as Mols L also showed growth of cargo turnover in January this year.

 

In 2015, the Liepaja port handled 5.6 million tons of cargos, up 5.9% from 2014. This year the annual cargo turnover at the port is planned at 6.9 million tons.
