Lithuanian Railways (AB Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai) on September 14th opened its representative office in Astana, Kazakhstan. The goal is to boost freight in both directions on the route China-Kazakhstan-Lithuania-Europe, reports LETA/ELTA.

According to Director General of Lithuanian Railways, Stasys Dailydka, cooperation – which was encouraged by President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite and President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and continued by transport ministries as well as railway, port and logistics companies – is growing stronger each year.

"Kazakhstan is Lithuania's major railway partner in Central Asia. For six years now we have witnessed consistent growth of the international trade volume between our countries. I am sure that the opening of the representative office in Kazakhstan will enable us to more actively develop freight transport, logistics centres and container train projects," said Dailydka.

According to the director general, the decision to open the representative office in Kazakhstan was determined by economic and geopolitical tendencies around the globe. It is hoped the move will allow Lithuanian Railways to work more actively in the vast Asia-Europe transport market, create new and develop existing products of the company, such as container train project Sun (Saule).

In 2014, 803,000 tonnes of cargoes were transported to and from Lithuania and Kazakhstan, or by 25.5 percent more compared to 2013. Mostly mineral, petroleum and food products were transported.
