Estonian farmers can sell live pigs to Ukraine

BC, Tallinn, 28.05.2015.Print version
Estonian Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) and the Veterinary Office of Ukraine signed export certificates according to which Estonian pig farmers have a chance to start exporting live pigs to Ukraine, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"Access to the Ukrainian market gives Estonian pig farmers pretty big opportunities to start exporting more live pigs again. Export of live pigs has for pig farmers been difficult ever since Russia limited the import of live pigs from the EU in 2012," said Director General of the FVO Ago Pärtel.

The export certificate shall be valid for all pig farmers, whose farms are not located in the areas affected by restrictions due to African swine fever.

Estonia exported 109,557 live pigs in 2014, most of which were sold to Lithuania. In 2011, 212,341 pigs were exported from Estonia, then the main destination was Russia.
