Liepaja Port hopes to double its cargo volume
This is almost twice as much as in 2014 – last year, the port's stevedoring companies handled 5.3 million tons of cargo, which is the second largest cargo turnover in the history of the restored Liepaja Port.
According to Sesks, the aim is to increase cargo turnover with every year, and to invest the profit in infrastructure. Last year's profit of the board of Liepaja Special Economic Zone will be used to acquire the European Union's structural funds, as they require co-funding.
In the first three months of this year, Liepaja Port handled 1.36 million tons, which is 3.6% less than at the beginning of 2014.
Sesks admits that the current geopolitical situation is complicated, however, there is a need for "dialogue and cooperation in order to offer our services to both the neighboring states and farther countries."
In 2014, the board of Liepaja Special Economic Zone turned over EUR 9,392,335 and earned EUR 1,080,207.
