In January-March, cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports grew by 2.1%

In January-March 2015, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 92 727,5 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +2,1% or +1 922,9 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

UST-LUGA PORT is the priority project related with cargo handling capacity development of Russian ports in the Baltic Sea region. Cargo handling capacity in January – March of 2015 increased as many as by 4,47 mln tn or by 27,0% to  21,03 mln tn comparing with January – March of 2014.

 

Oil products, crude oil and coal constitute even 92% of overall Seaport cargo handling turnover:


- 7, 35 mln tn of oil products were transhiped, +26,9% or + 1,56 mln yoy;

- 7,0 mln  tn of crude oil were transhiped, +35,3% or +1,83 mln tn yoy;

- 4,89 mln tn of coal were handled, +23,6% or +932,8 thou. tn yoy.


Other categories of cargo that made the impact on overall cargo handling turnover in the Seaport were as follows:

 

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 452,7 thou. tn were handled, +17,3% or +66,7 thou. tn yoy; 

- metal189,4 thou. tn were handled, more by 473,5 times or by 189,0 thou. tn yoy.


Other categories of cargo with decreased handling rates were as follows:


- liquid natural gas -294,3 thou. tn were transhiped, -1,4% or -4,3 thou. tn yoy;

 

- containerised cargoes183,7 thou. tn were handled, -5,5% or -8,1 thou. tn yoy;

 

- fertilizers115,8 thou. tn were transhiped, -17,0% or -7,2 thou. tn yoy.

 

Altogether 14,65 mln tn of products, i.e. more by 5,4% or by 747,3 thou. tn were handled in  PRIMORSK PORT in January – March of 2015.

 

Primorsk Port is the centre of Russian crude oil and oil products export:


- 10,92 mln tn of crude oil were transhiped, -1,8% or -204,0 thou. tn yoy;

- 3,73 mln tn oil products were transhipped,  +34,3% or +951,3 thou. tn  yoy.  

 

In January – March of 2015 the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG handled 12,96 mln tn  of cargo, i.e., less  by 7,6% or by 1,07 mln tn than within the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Basic categories of cargo that made the most significant impact on cargo handling results in January – March of 2015 were as follows: 


- containerised cargoes4,98 mln tn were handled, -15,5% or -912,8 thou. tn yoy;

- oil products2,75 mln tn were transhiped, -0,4% or -11,2 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 1,76 mln tn were transhiped, +16,4% or +247,8 thou. tn yoy;

- metal1,61 mln tn were handled, +1,0% or +15,7 thou. tn yoy;

- scrap metal542,9 thou. tn were handled, +3,4% or +18,0 thou. tn yoy.


Within the period of January – March of 2015, Klaipeda Seaport cargo handling turnover increased by 3,8% to  9,04 mln tn, i.e.  more by 333,6 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Year-on-year changes of total turnover  in January - March of 2015 according to cargo types:

 

Liquid cargo – 2 356,6  thou tn were handled, +36,5% or +630,4 thou. tn yoy;

General cargo – 2 828,4 thou. tn were handled, +0,2% or +4,4 thou. tn yoy;

Dry and bulk cargo – 3 854,4 thou. tn were handled, -7,2% or more -301,2 thou. tn yoy.

1 517 vessels were reported to call Klaipeda Seaport in January – March of 2015,i.e. less by 1,7% or by 27 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.  This means that the segment of larger vessels continues to increase relatively. Statistical data of the late years proves that the number of large vessels calling Klaipeda seaport has been constantly growing.  382 vessels above 200 metres in length called the seaport in 2013, in 2014 the number of such type of vessels increased to 465 – even by 21,7%  Comparing with the number of vessels calling the Seaport five years ago the number of vessels above 200 metres in length calling the Seaport in 2014 increased twice. Respectively the capacity of vessels ( GT – gross tonnage) increased as well. The total gross tonnage sum of vessels calling the Seaport in 2014, comparing with 2013, increased by 12,5.

 

In January – March of 2015 the growth of cargo handling turnover by 6,7% -was achieved in the FREEPORT OF RIGA - totally 10,6 mln tn were handled ( the yoy change was  +662,8 thou. tn).


Such a significant growth was achieved due to dynamics of basic cargo categories:


- the most abundant cargo of the Seaport is coal. 3,94 mln tn were handled (+15,1% or +515,3 thou. tn yoy);

- handling  of oil products2,90 mln tn were transhiped (+2,7% or +75,9 thou. tn yoy);

- containerised cargoes1,03 mln tn were handled (+1,3% or 13,2 thou. tn yoy);

- fertilizers 724,3 thou. tn were handled (+39,2% or +203,9 thou. tn yoy).

 

The reason of such a robust growth of handling volumes of fertilizers were handling operations at the new Riga Fertilizer Terminal (the joint project of the Freeport of Riga Port and Uralchem).  

 

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 94,7  thou. passengers in January – March of 2015 (the yoy change was -41,8% or -68,2 thou passengers). 

 

In January – March of 2015 the cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS comparing with the corresponding period of 2014 dropped down to 7,49 mln tn , i.e., -16,7% or

-1 500,0 thou.  tn yoy.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – March of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 4 648,0 thou. tn were transhiped, -4,7% or -231,0 thou tn yoy;

- coal1 781,0 thou. tn were handled, -26,5% or -643, 0 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 452,0 thou. tn were handled, -0,9% or -4,0 thou. tn yoy;

- timber – 123,0 thou. tn were handled, -16,3% or -24,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers119,0 thou. tn were handled, -85,3% or -692,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. Within the analysed period 16 829 passengers called the port of Ventspils, i.e., more by 57,7% or by 6 159 passengers comparing with January – March of 2014.

 

Vessels. In total the accommodated 390 vessels, the yoy change was -11,8%, or -52 vessels.

 

The total throughput in the JOINT PORT of TALLINN in January – March of 2015 was 6,29 mln tn, -24,0. or – 1 988,8 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period in 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – March of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products3 944,7 thou. tn were transhiped, -35,0% or -2 119,7 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes 1 036,3 thou. tn were handled, +11,0% or +102,4 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes 437,9 thou. tn were handled, -16,0% or -83,3 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers432,2 thou. tn were handled, +21,3% or +75,8 thou tn.

 

Passenger traffic. In January –March of 2015 the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 1 757,5 thou. passengers, i.e. less by  2,6% or by 46,0 thou. passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Vessels. 1 611 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. more by 0,1% or by 1 vessel  comparing with January – March of 2014.

 

3,99 mln tn of cargo, i.e. more by 2,2% or by 84, 7 thou tn  were handled in  VYSOTSK SEAPORT  in January – March of 2015 comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Only two categories of cargo are handled in this Seaport:


- oil products2,88 mln tn were handled, +7,0% or +117,7 thou tn yoy;

- coal1,10 mln tn  were handled, -8,9% or -70,7 thou tn yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT OF KALININGRAD was 3,26  mln tn,  i.e. -0,1% or -3,4 thou. tn than in January – March of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – March of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products599,4 thou. tn were transhiped, -16,6% or -113,9 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes420,0 thou. tn were handled, +50,8% or +141,4 thou. tn yoy;

- grain326,2 thou. tn were handled, more by 3,3 times or by +227,4 thou. tn yoy;

- metal270,2 thou. tn were handled, -20,1% or -68,1 thou. tn;

- containerised cargoes – 189,4 thou. tn were handled, -37,2% or -112,4 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes (TEU) -37 613 TEU were handled, -55,9% or -47 618 TEU.


The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA in January – March of 2015  was 1 365,0 thou. tn, -3,6% or -51,7 tnou. tn yoy).

 

Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – March of 2015 were as follows:


- grain705,6 thou. tn were handled ( the throughput of grain handling accounts  as many as for 52,0% of the overall cargo handling), the yoy change  was -12,6% or -101,6 thou. tn.

- Timber – 181,5 thou. tn were handled, +48,8% or by+59,5 thou. tn yoy;

Ro – Ro cargoes – 159,7 thou. tn were handled, -6,0% or -10,2 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 8 119 passengers, i.e., less by 5,4% or by 461 passenger yoy.

 

Vessels. In January – March of the current year 346 vessels called the Seaport, i.e., less by 2,8% or by 10 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.
