In January-February, cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports increased by 3.2%

In January-February 2015, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 60 585,0 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +3,2% or +1 879,8 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

UST-LUGA PORT is the priority project related with cargo handling capacity development of Russian ports in the Baltic Sea region. Cargo handling capacity in January – February of 2015 increased as many as by 2,59 mln tn or by 23,8% to  13,45 mln tn comparing with January – February of 2014.

 

Oil products, crude oil and coal constitute even 92% of overall Seaport cargo handling turnover:


- 4 666,8 thou. tn of oil products were transhiped, +23,2% or + 879,5 thou tn yoy;

- 4 499,6 thou.  tn of crude oil were transhiped, +27,2% or +960,8 thou. tn yoy;

- 3 172,3 thou. tn of coal were handled, +25,3% or +641,0 thou. tn yoy.


Other categories of cargo that made the impact on overall cargo handling turnover in the Seaport were as follows:

 

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 314,0 thou. tn were handled, +38,1% or +86,6 thou. tn yoy; 

- liquefied natural gas – 170,6 thou. tn were transhiped, –15,1% or –30,4 thou. tn.


Other categories of cargo with decreased handling rates in January-February of 2015 were as follows:

 

- containerised cargoes – 121,3 thou. tn were handled, –5,5% or –7,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 75,4 thou. tn were handled, –17,0% or –15,4 thou. tn yoy.


In January – February of 2015, the SEAPORT of SAINT – PETERSBURG handled 8,1 mln tn  of cargo, i.e., less  7,7% or by 677,2 thou. tn than within the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Basic categories of cargo that made the most significant impact on cargo handling results in January – February of 2015 were as follows: 


- containerised cargoes – 3 141,4 thou. tn were handled, –15,4% or –572,9 thou. tn yoy;

- oil products – 1 701,8 thou. tn were transhiped, 2,5% or +41,9 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 1066,5 thou. tn were transhiped, +16,7% or +152,4 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 987,1 thou. tn were handled, –0,3% or –3,3 thou. tn yoy;

- scrap metal – 397,2 thou. tn were handled, +29,8% or +91,3 thou. tn yoy.

 

Altogether 9,89 mln tn of products, i.e. more by 7,6% or by 700,2 thou. tn were handled in  PRIMORSK PORT in January – February of 2015.

 

Primorsk Port is the centre of Russian crude oil and oil products export:


- 7 396,8 thou. tn of crude oil were transhipped, +1,2% or +86,1thou. tn yoy;

- 2 493,3 thou. tn oil products were transhipped,  +32,7% or +614,1 thou. tn  yoy.  

 

The overall turnover in the PORT of VYSOTSK within the analysed period was 2,51 mln tn of cargo, i.e.,  more by 1,9% or by 47,0 thou. tn comparing with January – February of 2014.

 

This port handles basically two types of cargo:

 

- oil products, 1 793,0 thou. tn were transhiped, +7,0% or +117,7 thou. ton yoy; 

coal, 720,3 thou. tn were handled, –8,9% or –70,7 thou. tn yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT OF KALININGRAD was 2,19 mln tn,  i.e. +4,1% or +87,1 thou. tn than in January – February of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – February of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 400,2 thou. tn were transhiped, –17,7% or –85,8 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 302,6 thou. tn were handled, +79,8% or +134,3 thou. tn yoy;

- grain – 259,4 thou. tn were handled, –24,5% or –84,1 thou. tn yoy;

- metal – 176,5 thou. tn were handled, –30,3% or –76,6 thou. tn;

- containerised cargoes – 123,8 thou. tn were handled, –33,7% or –63,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

The overall turnover in the PORT of VYBORG within the analysed period was 156,9 thou. tn, i.e., less by 21,3% or by 42,5 thou tn than in January – February of 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories handled in this seaport are as follows:

 

- fertilizers – 85,5 thou. tn were transhiped, –6,4% or –5,8 thou. tn yoy;

- coal – 13,5 thou. tn were handled, –73,8% or –38,0 thou. tn yoy;

- other categories of cargo – 57,9 thou. tn were handled.


Successful implementation of investment projects accounting approximately for 90 percent is one of the factors helping Klaipeda Seaport to win in the competitive struggle. 

 

Within the period of January – February of 2015 the turnover of Klaipeda Seaport cargo handling increased as many as by 10,4% – totally 6,04 mln tn, i.e. more by 568,1 thou. tn comparing with January – February of 2014 were handled.

 

In the ranking list of the increase of cargo handling turnover  achieved in January – February of 2015 in all Baltic region seaports Klaipeda Seaport occupies the third place (+10,4% or +568,1 thou. tn year-on-year) after Ust Luga Seaport (+23,8% or +2 586,4 thou. tn year –on-year) and Primorsk Seaport (+7,6% or +700,2 thou. tn year –on-year).


Basic cargo types that made the impact on successful cargo handling results in January – February of 2015 were as  follows:

 

- fertilizers – 2 112,9 thou tn were handled (+34,2% or +538,2 thou. tn yoy);

- oil products – 1 295,7 thou. tn were transhiped (+48,0% or +420,3 thou. tn yoy);

- iron and steel products – 131,0 thou. tn were handled (4,3 times or more by 100,3 thou tn)

 

Basic cargo types that saw a decrease in January-February of 2015 were as follows: 


- containerised cargoes – 838,9 thou.  tn were handled (  –3,8% or  –33,0 thou. tn yoy);

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 649,9 thou.  tn were handled (-5,3% or –19,2 thou. tn yoy);

- grain – 342,4 thou. tn were handled (-5,3% or –19,2 thou. tn yoy);

 

930 vessels were reported to call Klaipeda Seaport  in January – February of 2015,e. less by 0,1% or by 1 vessel comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.  

Within the analysed period 19 432 passengers visited Klaipeda Seaport , i. e., less by 7,6% or by 1 592  passengers than in January – February of 2014.  

 

The total throughput in the JOINT PORT of TALLINN in January – February of 2015 was 4,35 thou. tn, –19,1pct. or – 1 029,2 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period in 2014.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – February of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 2 900,3 thou. tn were transhiped, –27,2% or –1 086 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 653,6 thou. tn were handled, +11,4% or +66,8 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 277,4 thou. tn were handled, –16,3% or –54,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 253,9 thou. tn were handled, +19,1% or +40,8 thou tn.

 

Passenger traffic. In January – February of 2015 the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 1 103,5 thou. passengers, i.e. less by  2,3% or by 26,3 thou. passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2014.

 

Vessels. 1 016 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. less by 1,6% or by 17 vessels   comparing with January – February of 2014.

 

In January – February of 2015 the significant growth of cargo handling turnover by +4,7% was achieved in the FREEPORT OF RIGA – totally 6,83 mln tn were handled ( the yoy change was  +307,3 thou. tn).


Such a significant growth was achieved due to dynamics of cargoes handled in the Seaport:


- the most abundant cargo of the seaport – coal. 2 550,5 thou. tn were handled (+12,9% or +292,1 thou. tn yoy);

- the handling  of oil products – 1 833,7 thou. tn were transhiped ( –3,6% or –69,1 thou.tn yoy);

- containerised cargoes – 667,4 thou. tn were handled (+3,8% or +24,5 thou. tn yoy);

- fertilizers – 455,3 thou. tn were handled (+33,0% or +112,9 thou. tn yoy). The reason of such a robust growth was the increasing throughput of the  new Riga Fertilizer Terminal (the joint project of the Freeport of Riga Port and Uralchem).  

 

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 61,4  thou. passengers in January – February of 2015 (the yoy change was –40,6% or –41,9 thou passengers).

 

In January – February of 2015 the cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS comparing with the corresponding period of 2014 dropped down to 4,83 mln tn , i.e., –18,3% or

-1 084,0 thou.  tn yoy.

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – February of 2015 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 2 913,0 thou. tn were transhiped, –10,8% or –351,0 thou tn yoy;

- coal – 1 203,0 thou. tn were handled, –25,4% or –409,0 tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 282,0 thou. tn were handled, –2,1% or –6,0 thou. tn yoy;

- timber – 79,0 thou. tn were handled, –17,7% or –17,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 64,0 thou. tn were handled, –86,7% or –419,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. Within the analysed period 10 412 passengers called the port of Ventspils, i.e., more by 58,7% or by 3 851 passenger comparing with January – February of 2014.

 

Vessels. In total the port rendered services to 248 vessels, the yoy change was –17,1%, or –51 vessel.

 

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA in January – February of 2015 was 939,7 thou. tn (+15,0% or +122,7  thou. tn yoy).

 

Basic cargo categories that made the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – February of 2015 were as follows:


- grain – 536,1 thou. tn were handled (the throughput of grain handling accounts  as many as for 57,0% of the overall cargo handling), the yoy change  was +23,8% or +103,2 thou. tn.

- timber and forest products – 109,6 thou. tn were handled, +56,6% or +39,6 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro – Ro cargoes – 99,5 thou. tn were handled, –7,4% or –8,0 thou. tn yoy;

 

Passenger traffic. The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 5 141 passenger, i.e., less by 7,4% or by 412 passengers yoy.

 

Vessels. In January – February of the current year 219 vessels called the port, i.e., more by 1,4% or by 3 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.
