In January-December, cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports grew by 3.6%

In January-December 2014, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 122 216 490.8368 161,5 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +3,6% or +8 12 681,6 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

UST-LUGA PORT is the priority project related with cargo handling capacity development of Russian ports in the Baltic Sea region. Cargo handling capacity in January – December of 2014 increased as many as by 13,1 mln tn or 20,8% to  75,7 mln tn comparing with January – December of 2013.


Oil products, crude oil and coal constitute as many as 90,4% of overall Seaport cargo handling turnover:


- 25,7 mln tn of oil products were transhipped, +56,7% or +9,3 mln tn yoy;

- 23,3 mln tn of crude oil were transhipped, -0,2% or -36,6 thou. tn yoy;

- 19,4 mln tn of coal were handled, +8,1% or +1,5 mln tn yoy.

 

Other categories of cargo that made the impact on overall cargo handling turnover in the Seaport were as follows:

 

- 1,8 mln tn of Ro-Ro cargoes were handled, +29,7% or +419,2 thou. tn yoy; 

- 1 113,3 thou. tn of the new cargo type – liquefied natural gas were transhipped.

 

In January – December of 2014 the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG handled 61,2 mln tn  of cargo, i.e., more by  +5,5% or by +3,2mln tn than within the corresponding period of 2013.

 

Basic categories of cargo making the most significant impact on cargo handling results in January – December of 2014 were as follows: 

 

- containerised cargoes23,8  mln tn were handled, +2,8% or +639,1 thou. tn yoy;

- oil products14,2 mln tn were transhiped, +1,9% or +269,3 thou. tn yoy.

 

Other categories of cargo making the most significant impact on cargo handling results in January – December of 2014 were as follows: 

 

- fertilizers – 7,6 mln tn were transhipped, +25,9% or +1,6 mln tn yoy;

- metal – 5,8 mln tn were handled, +2,8% or +155,1 thou. tn yoy;

- scrap metal – 2,2 mln tn were handled, +58,9% or +832,5 thou. tn yoy.

 

Altogether 53,7 mln tn of products, i.e. less by 15,9% or by 10,2 mln tn were handled in PRIMORSK PORT in January – December of 2014.

 

Primorsk Port is the centre of Russian crude oil and oil products export:


- 42,4 mln tn of crude oil were transhipped, - 22,3% or -12,23 mln tn yoy;

- 11,3 mln tn oil products were transhipped,  +21,5% or +2,0 mln tn  yoy.  

 

The overall turnover in the PORT of VYSOTSK within the analysed period was 17,4 mln tn, more by 7,9% or by 1,3 mln tn comparing with January – December of 2013.

 

This port handles basically two types of cargo:

 

- oil products, 12,1 mln tn were transhiped, +8,0% or +904,5 thou. ton yoy; 

- coal, 5,3 mln tn were handled, +7,5% or +366,5 thou. tn yoy.

 

The total throughput in the PORT OF KALININGRAD was 13,9 mln tn,  i.e. more by 1,6% or by

 219,6 thou. tn than in January – December of 2013.

 

Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – December of 2014 were as follows:

 

- grain2,8 mln tn were handled, +85,5% or +1,3 mln tn yoy;

- oil products2,0 mln tn were transhiped, -40,3% or -1,3 mln tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes1,8 mln tn were handled, +80,0% or +806,6 thou. tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes – 1,3 mln tn were handled, +0,6% or +7,7 thou. tn yoy.

 

The overall turnover in the PORT of VYBORG within the analysed period was 1,7 mln tn, more by 9,9% or by 149,5 thou tn than in January – December of 2013.

 

Basic cargo categories handled in this seaport are as follows:

 

- coal – 631,5 thou. tn were handled, +12,5% or +70,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers – 614,6 thou. tn were transhiped, +6,2% or +35,7 thou. tn yoy;

- other categories of cargo – 416,7 thou. tn were handled.


Within the period of January – December 2014 Klaipeda Seaport cargo handling turnover increased by 9,0% – totally  36,41 mln tn were handled, i.e.  more by 3,0 mln tn comparing with the corresponding period of the last year.

 

36,41 mln tn of cargo is the second best cargo handling result within the entire history of Klaipeda Seaport. The best annual result was set in 2011 when 36,6 mln tn were handled

 

Basic cargo categories that determined the successful throughput in January - December of 2014 were as follows: 

 

- fertilizers – 11,9 mln tn were transhiped  (+39,2% or 3,36 mln tn year-on-year)

 

Fertilizers is the most abundant cargo of Klaipeda Seaport accounting for as many as 33% of the overall Klaipeda Seaport cargo handling turnover.   11,94 mln tn is  the new record achieved in fertilize handling in Klaipeda seaport.

 

- containerised cargoes – 5,6 mln tn were handled ( +23,0% or + 1,05mln tn year-on-year);

 

5,6 mln tn is the absolute record of containerised cargo handling in Klaipeda Seaport.  The previous record was achieved in 2013 when 4,6 mln tn were handled.

 

In terms of  standard  units (TEU) the containerised cargo handling capacity in January – December of 2014 also achieved the record – this year 450 428 TEU was handled. The previous best annual result was 402 747 TEU (in 2013 ).

 

- agriculture products – 3,55 mln tn were handled (+12,7% or +399,9 thou. tn year –on-year) including 2,89 mln tn of grain , i.e. more by 27,9% or by 929,7 thou. tn than in January – December of 2013.

 

This is the record grain throughput within the entire history of Klaipeda Seaport.

 

6 963 vessels were reported to call Klaipeda Seaport in January – December of 2014, i.e. more by 0,6% or by 39 vessels comparing with January – December of 2013. 

 

Within the analysed period 344 837 passengers visited Klaipeda Seaport , i. e., more by 23,0% or by 64 571  passengers than in January – December of 2013.

344 837 is the new record number of passengers. By the way, in 2014 the new record number of cruise passengers equalling to 57 797 passengers  was achieved as well. 

 

The total throughput in the JOINT PORT of TALLINN in January – December of 2014 was 28,3 mln tn, +0,3% or +74,4 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period in 2013.

 

Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – December of 2014 were as follows:

 

- oil products18,84 mln tn were transhiped, -0,6% or -121,7 thou. tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes 4,0 mln tn were handled, +8,6% or 315,9 thou tn yoy;

- containerised cargoes 1,97 mln. tn were handled, +11,1% or +197,2 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers1,5 mln tn were handled, -13,4% or -232,1 thou tn.

 

Passenger traffic. In January – December of 2014 the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 9 569,3 thou. passengers, i.e. more by  3,6% or by 332,9 thou. passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2013.

 

Vessels. 6 865 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. it is the identical number of vessels  comparing with January – December of 2013.

 

In January – December of 2014 the rapid growth of cargo handling turnover – as many as by +15,8% - was achieved in the FRREPORT OF RIGA - totally 41,08 mln tn were handled ( the yoy change was  +5,6 mln tn ).


Such a significant growth was achieved due to:


- the throughput of the most abundant cargo of the seaport – coal. 14,9 mln tn were handled (+6,4% or +893,5 thou. tn yoy);

- the increased by 45,2% handling  rates of oil products10,2 mln tn were transhiped ( the

yoy change was +3,2 mln tn ). Such a  significant surge was determined by investments to new oil product tanks, other infrastructure objects and to capital dredging of the seaport ( the port is able to accommodate  the tankers with draught up to 14,7 metres). All these factors created the possibilities to oil companies operating in the Freeport of Riga to attract new clients.

- fertilizers 2,5 mln tn were handled (+80,3% or +1,1 mln tn yoy). The reason of such a robust growth of handling volumes of fertilizers was the  new Riga Fertilizer Terminal (the joint project of the Freeport of Riga Port and Uralchem) that has started operating very actively.

 

Other cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – December of 2014 were as follows:

 

- containerised cargoes4,1 mln tn were handled (+6,1% or +239,6 thou tn yoy);

- timber and forest products 2,9 mln tn were handled (less by 12,1% or by 398,8 thou tn yoy).

 

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 737,9  thou. passengers in January – December of 2014 (the yoy change was -11,9% or -99,8 thou passengers) including 60 840 passengers of cruise liners

 

In January – December of 2014 the cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS comparing with the corresponding period of 2013 dropped down to 26,2 mln tn ( -8,9% or -2,56 mln  tn yoy).


Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – December of 2014 were as follows:

 

- oil products – 15,1 mln tn were transhiped, -3,1% or -484,0 thou tn yoy;

- coal5,9 mln tn were handled, -21,4% or -1,6 mln tn yoy;

- Ro-Ro cargoes – 1,9 mln tn were handled, -1,1% or -20,0 thou. tn yoy;

- fertilizers1,5 mln were handled, -2,9% or +45,0 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic. Within the analysed period 82 952 passengers called the port of Ventspils, i.e., more by 38,0% or by 22 819 passengers comparing with January – December of 2013.

 

Vessels. In total the port rendered services to 1 534 vessels, the yoy change was -11,3  pct, or -195 vessels.

 

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA in January – December of 2014  was 5,3 mln tn  ( +9,5% or +461,9  thou. tn yoy).

 

Basic cargo categories making the greatest impact on cargo handling results in January – December of 2014 were as follows:


- grain2,75 mln tn were handled ( the throughput of grain handling accounts  as many as for 52,0% of the overall cargo handling), the yoy change  was +55,9% or +910,2 thou. tn.

- Ro – Ro cargoes – 780,8 thou. tn were handled, +13,0% or +90,1 thou. tn yoy;

- timber and forest products – 535,6 thou. tn were handled, less by 21,0% or by 142,7 thou. tn yoy;

- construction materials – 522,3 thou. tn were handled, +11,2% or +52,5 thou. tn yoy.

 

Passenger traffic.  The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 42 305 passengers, i.e., less by 1,0% or by 302 passengers yoy.

 

Vessels. In January – December of the current year 1 368 vessels called the port, i.e., more by 5,0% or by 60 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.
