New automobile sales in Latvia expected to grow 15% in 2014

New automobile sales in Latvia will have increased 15% this year as compared to 2013, the Latvian Authorized Automobile Dealers Association's Vice-President Ingus Rutins told LETA.

The significant increase this year may be largely attributed to weak sales in 2013, he said.

Furthermore, the expected results this year are better than the association originally anticipated at the beginning of this year, when it said new automobile sales could increase 6.2% in 2014.

"Overall, market growth is slowing down and there is a risk of stagnation next year. Already we are seeing clients who cancel their orders and give up the down payment, believing that it would cost them less than a badly-thought-out purchase. Trucking companies have been affected the most by the developments in Ukraine," said the expert.

Rutins also said that 2014 has been very a successful year for electric cars. "By the end of the year, about 160 automobiles will have been sold in Latvia – "Volkswagen Up", "Nissan Leaf", "Nissan NV200", "Mitsubishi i-MEV", "Tesla" and others. This accounts for slightly more than 1% of the market – which is a five times larger share than the European Union's average," said Rutins.
