On 18 September, at the 30th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, a General Debate was held on the reports by the UN Secretary General and the UN High Commissioner. Ambassador Jānis Kārkliņš, the Permanent Representative of Latvia to the United Nations in Geneva, delivered an interregional Joint Statement reaffirming the right to freedom of expression including creative and artistic expression on behalf of a group of 53 states, reported BC the MFA of Latvia.

The signatories stated that they stand firm in their commitment to protect and promote the right to freedom of expression, which is critical to the functioning of democratic societies. The statement voices concern over threats, censorship, and violations of human rights faced by representatives of creative professions worldwide, and expresses the conviction that reactions to controversial artwork should be based on open dialogue and not on violence.

The authors of the statement are the United States, Benin, Latvia, and Uruguay, and its signatories are 53 countries from various regions across the globe.

Latvia has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council from 2015 to 2017. Latvia’s priorities at the UNHRC are freedom of expression, gender equality and engaging civil society.
