Latvian residents donate EUR 2,000 for Ukrainian victims over one week

BC, Riga, 23.09.2014.Print version
Since the opening of the Support Fund for the Victims of the Ukraine Conflict on September 18, residents have donated more than EUR 2,000, the head of Ziedot.lv Ruta Dimanta said, cites LETA.

Dimanta said that the fund has two goals. The first aim is to use the collected funds to offer help to civilians and military units who suffer in Ukraine to provide them with treatment and rehabilitation in Latvian hospitals.

The first victim to receive support is already known. It is a 22-year-old man who, as a volunteer guard of Ukraine, was the last man standing after a battle near Lutuhyne, the organizers of the fund said.

The second aim of the fund is to offer an opportunity to Latvian medics to go to Ukraine in order to help the local medics in providing treatment to the victims.

Dimanta said that residents ought to donate because Latvia has experienced a similar occupation, thus, realizing the need for support. She believes that the involvement of residents would be a good signal to Latvia's cooperation partners. "If we do not help Ukraine, why would anyone help us?" Dimanta said in a rhetorical manner.
