Lithuania's prosecutors hope for Russia's help to extraditing Romanov

BC, Vilnius, 24.03.2014.Print version
According to Prosecutor General Darius Valys, Lithuania's prosecutors hope for the help of the colleagues in Moscow in extraditing runaway banker Vladimir Romanov, informs LETA/ELTA.

"The law and order is cooperating with the foreign countries and there is not need for it to flight and to walk in the foreign country (). The law and order officers are cooperating on the ground of the international treaties," said Valys.

Romanov left Lithuania in early May of 2013, saying he was visiting Moscow on business and had medical issues that he decided to treat in the Russian capital. Later Lithuanian prosecutors and the Financial Crime Investigation Service received confirmation from Russian doctors that Romanov, former owner of the bankrupt Ukio Bankas, had suffered a stroke.

Lithuanian authorities aim to interrogate him in the Ukio Bankas collapse case on suspicion of squandering 50 million litas (EUR 14.5 million). Upon return to Lithuania, he will be charged. An arrest warrant has been issued in absentia.

At the weekend, the newspaper Lietuvos rytas published an interview with V. Romanov. The conversation took place in a Moscow cafe.
