Covid-19 Latvia: EUR 180 to be paid in special crisis-time unemployment benefit

BC, Riga, 24.04.2020.Print version
The parliament in the final reading today adopted legislative amendments, providing that EUR 180 will be paid in special crisis-time unemployment benefit instead of the earlier plan of EUR 130, informed LETA/BNS.

Initially, the Welfare Ministry proposed to set the benefit at EUR 130.  The special benefit will be paid to jobless persons whose unemployment benefits expire during the crisis, but no longer than for four months.

The new regulations will be in force until December 31, 2020, and will refer to persons who registered as unemployed starting from March 12, 2020.

Earlier, the Welfare Ministry's spokesman Egils Zarins told LETA that the special unemployment benefits will be provided to jobless persons whose unemployment benefits have ended on March 12 or later during the crisis and who have not found a new work and are not engaged in any commercial activity.

Welfare Minister Ramona Petravica (KPV LV) noted earlier that, due to the Covid-19 crisis, many people's chances of finding a job have significantly decreased, therefore she, together with experts from the Welfare Ministry, has proposed the special unemployment benefits.
