Covid-19 Latvia: Government allocates EUR 2.5 mln to be paid in bonuses for police officers and border guards

BC, Riga , 16.04.2020.Print version
The government today supported allocation of EUR 2,590,703 to be paid in bonuses for police officers, border guards and State Security Service officials, the Interior Ministry informed LETA.

The bonuses will be 20% of salary.

The Finance Ministry will provide the funding to the Interior Ministry from the government's emergency funds, and the bonuses will be paid for the period from March 12 to May 31.

The bonuses will only be paid to officers and officials in direct contact with persons infected with Covid-19 virus or persons suspected of being infected with the virus, as well as officers and officials who work in high-intensity and high-risk work settings to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic.

Just like physicians, employees in the internal affairs system are exposed to the risk of infection as they enforce the restrictions and security measures, and they also have to work longer hours than usual. How quickly we recover from the pandemic depends not only on healthcare workers, but also on those working in the internal affairs system, said Interior Minister Sandis Girgens (KPV LV).

As reported, bonuses will also be paid to paramedics, family practitioners, specialists at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the Health Ministry's Crisis Management Group, medics from the Latvian Infectious Diseases Center, laboratories and emergency rooms.
