It would take EUR 5.2 million to raise capitation for family physicians by 30% in 2018, Sarmite Veide, the head of the Latvian Association of Family Physicians, said after today’s meeting with Health Minister Anda Caksa and Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers), informs LETA.

Sarmite Veide.

The head of the association indicated that the talks resulted in an agreement that the necessary estimates would be drawn up today and tomorrow and that the health minister would consult the health sector’s strategic council. This means that the final decision on meeting the medics’ demand for the additional EUR 5.3 million might be taken tomorrow.

The family physicians’ strike is ongoing, but the Latvian Association of Family Physicians will decide on further steps as soon as the answer on capitation is received.

Veide said that next year salaries for all other physicians will be raised by 48%, while the family physicians’ salaries will only be increased by 16.6%, which is a huge difference, and that the association demands an equal pay raise for all.

As reported, Health Minister Anda Caksa, Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and Sarmite Veide, the leader of the Latvian Association of Family Physicians, failed today to reach an agreement on ending the family physicians’ ongoing strike.
