The direct cost of Latvia's Presidency at the Council of the European Union is currently estimated at no more than EUR 60 million over a three-year period leading up to, and during the Presidency, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Unity) said during a press conference at the Latvian National Library today, cites LETA.

Replying to a question about how much the Presidency had cost, Rinkevics said: "We will still be paying the bills for another month or month-and-a-half," but, it is currently estimated that the direct cost of the Presidency and its preparatory stage, a period OF three years in total, cost under EUR 60 million."

Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) was quick to add that the Presidency is a duty that the country has to perform once in 14 years.

"We have not calculated the costs yet, but it is clear that the budget has not been exceeded. We have actually saved a bit," she said.

The Latvian Presidency focused on three priorities: competitive Europe, digital Europe and engaged Europe.

Latvia took over the EU Presidency from Italy at the beginning of 2015, and will hand the Presidency over to Luxembourg at the end of June.
