Latvian government allocates EUR 43,860 to send experts to Ukraine

BC, Riga, 11.03.2015.Print version
In order to make a voluntary contribution for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine, the government decided on Tuesday to allocate EUR 43,860 to the Defense Ministry, writes LETA.

The Cabinet of Ministers also agreed in principle to send three civil experts to work in Ukraine as part of the EU Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform Ukraine. Meanwhile, up to ten civil experts will be sent to the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine, and one to work at the State Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.

The Defense Ministry indicated that it is in the interests of Latvia to involve the international community and organizations in the attempts to stabilize the situation in Ukraine. The ministry also said that Latvia, as a member state of the European Union, considering the impact of the Ukrainian question on both external and domestic security, should contribute to the EU Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform Ukraine by assigning two national civil experts to participate in the mission.

The Finance Ministry indicated that the motion to send Latvian experts to Ukraine is premature, as no reply has been received yet about the participation of experts or the extension of the OSCE mission.

"It is unacceptable that funds are being allocated prematurely, as the OSCE has provided no information about other experts being approved for the mission. Furthermore, it is not known whether the said mission will be extended," the Finance Ministry announced.
