481 counterfeit euro banknotes were discovered in Estonia last year, of which 249 in the second half of the year, Estonia’s central bank Eesti Pank announced, cites LETA.

As compared to the first half of the year, the number of counterfeits increased by 7%.

In 2014, the biggest number of forged banknotes were 50-euros banknotes.

The central bank said that the main cause of the increase in the number of counterfeits is more effective work of law enforcement agencies in the fight against counterfeits, but also more active work of distributors of counterfeit money.

Considering the amount of cash in circulation in Estonia, the number of counterfeits is still very low: counterfeits form an estimated of 0.001% of banknotes in circulation.
