Two dead in accident at biogas cogeneration station outside Riga

BC, Riga, 04.11.2014.Print version
On the outskirts of Riga, at the Sabiedribas Marupe company's bio-and natural gas cogeneration station, an accident occurred yesterday afternoon, costing two lives, informs LETA.

The call was taken by the State Fire and Rescue Service at 16.56. When the crew arrived, one person was being carried out of a building with no signs of life. Rescuers, in searching the cogeneration station, discovered another person, but medics were unable to revive him.

Rescuers also came across a third person, but his life is not in danger.

Reports say that the accident was an unexpected biogas leak.

Later it became known that the workers who died yesterday from gas poisoning at a cogeneration plant for the production of biogas enterprise Sabiedriba Marupe, did not use the gas masks. This was revealed by the Latvian radio representative of the State Labour Inspectorate Ugis Kozlovskis.

Initial information indicates that the biogas plant workers either did not have the means of individual protection, or they did not use the masks. Exactly the lack of gas masks led to the death. Kozlovskis noted that work on the biogas plant is not dangerous, if the necessary protective equipment is used.
