"The study provides several options. It will be presented at the Ministry of Energy and introduced to experts and the public. Afterwards decisions can be made which path is the best," the prime minister told the media after the presentation of the study to the Government.
Strategic development study of energy sector, which was presented at the Government, states that nuclear power is not the best choice when seeking to ensure a cheap source of electrical energy.
According to the Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI) that prepared the study, nuclear power would increase Lithuania's energy security – ensure reliable production and stable electricity cost, it would be a long-term source of energy as the plant could generate energy for up to 60 years. On the other hand, scientists noted that potentially high price of nuclear electrical energy alone would prevent to ensure energy security. LEI has also criticised nuclear energy over its potential safety issues.
