Belarusians reassure Lithuania: Astravets NPP will be safe

BC, Vilnius, 18.12.2013.Print version
Representatives of Belarus assure that the project of the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is arranged appropriately and the NPP will be safe, informs LETA/ELTA.

On Tuesday in Vilnius, the Belarusian social movement Ecological Initiative held a round-table discussion to present the results of radiation survey of the site of construction as well as the project of the Monitoring of the Environmental Impact of the Belarusian NPP Construction.

Chair of the Board of the social movement Ecological Initiative Yuri Sokolov said that Lithuanians were too much frightened about the construction of the NPP since it is built only 50 kilometres away from capital city Vilnius.

"The situation of Lithuania and Belarus is not unique. There are many NPPs in Europe that are built much closer to each other than the Astravets NPP will be built to Vilnius. Our specialists will definitely take over the practice and the experience of European countries," said Sokolov.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania claims that this discussion was not coordinated with the Ministry and none of the representatives of authorities was invited to attend this discussion as well as the press conference following the discussion.
