Lithuania and Jordan discussed cooperation on nuclear safety

On Wednesday, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Andrius Krivas met with the Permanent Representative of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations Zeid Ra'ad Zeid al Hussein, who is also responsible for his country's international cooperation in the field of nuclear security, reports BC the MFA.

The guest came to Lithuania to get acquainted with activities, capacity and organizational structure of Lithuanian institutions responsible for ensuring nuclear safety. Krivas emphasized that sharing best practices and experiences in the fields of nuclear safety and non-proliferation would contribute to closer cooperation between the two countries and enhance the capacity of member states to fight against illicit trafficking in nuclear and other radioactive materials.

 

The meeting also discussed future joint work at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Jordan will race to take Saudi Arabia's non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. The election will be held in the middle of December 2013.

 

During the visit, the Jordanian representative met with representatives from the Office of the Government of Lithuania, the Office of the President, visited the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate, the Radiation Protection Centre, and the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence in Medininkai.

 

At the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite presented a vision for the country's contribution to nuclear safety based on the need to strengthen international cooperation in the field of nuclear safety. Currently, Lithuania is preparing for the Nuclear Security Summit to be held in March 2014 in The Hague.
