Latvia wins court case vs. EU on allocation of emissions allowances

BC, Riga, 07.10.2013.Print version
Years of litigation have resulted in a court victory last week for the Republic of Latvia on the allocations in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, informs LETA.

This case dates back to the end of 2006, and the national emissions plan for 2008-12 that Latvia submitted to the EU repeatedly, which was subsequently rejected.

Latvia then decided to petition a European court of law asking to overturn the EU's decision and won. EU then filed an appeal, and – as announced Thursday – lost.

Justice Ministry State Secretary Martins Lazdovskis commented that the October 3rd ruling is a "positive outcome for Latvia's environmental interests."
