Time is running out in deciding the location of LNG terminal

If Estonia and Finland cannot agree by the end of June on which side of the Gulf of Finland the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal would be built, the chance of getting financing from the current financing round for the project disappears, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Prime Minister Andrus Ansip admitted at a press conference on Thursday that the government is under very big time pressure.

Ministers agreed at the cabinet meeting that negotiations with Finns have to become more intense and the best way to reach an agreement is to choose an unbiased mediator.

The analysis commissioned from the European Commission proposed Paldiski and Muuga in Estonia and Inkoo in Finland as suitable locations for the terminal.

"The analysis yielded a favourable result for Estonia. We think that the right place for the LNG terminal is in Estonia. Unfortunately Finns think that the right place is in Inkoo," said Ansip.

"If we cannot reach an agreement by the end of June, this financing round ends. The next chance emerges in 2016 and then there might not be means for that project anymore," added Ansip.
