Eesti Energia gives up plans of building second block of Auvere power station

BC, Tallinn, 17.01.2013.Print version
Estonian state-owned energy giant Eesti Energia considers building the second stage of the new Auvere power station in North East Estonia pointless and wants to abandon the plan, LETA/Eesti Ekspress writes.

According to the latest calculations, the new station would be unable to produce electricity for a competitive price. Thus the state should subsidise the station, the weekly claims.

The problem with the new power station lies in the European Union environmental requirements, compliance with which makes burning oil shale to produce electricity very expensive.

Currently the French company Alstom is building the first stage of the Auvere station which costs around 640 million euros; the cost of the second block would be over 500 million euros.
