The main goals of the joint-stock power utility Latvenergo in the four-year period from 2012 to 2015 include keeping its leading positions in the Baltics, diversification of energy sources and balanced development of electrical grids, the company's CEO Aris Zigurs said today at a conference on the development of Latvenergo in a deregulated market.

Commenting on the company's goal of retaining its leader position on the market, Zigurs explained that Latvenergo wants to have a share of about one-third of the Baltic market. Until now, there were power monopolies in all three countries, whereas now a lot of small players have entered the market, taking away some of the large companies' clients, writes LETA.

According to Latvenergo estimates, the company has lost about 5 percent to 6 percent of its market share in Latvia. More new players will enter the market after it is deregulated.

As for diversification of energy sources, Zigurs said that at the moment Latvenergo operates Daugava power plants and cogeneration plants. However, when the company has to sell electricity on a liberalized market, opportunities for building new facilities or participating in such projects must be considered.

Commenting on the development of electrical grids, Zigurs said there were quite a few problems to be dealt with, and the main goal was to improve the efficiency of the grids.

The company's strategic goals for the previous period have been reached for the most part, said Zigurs, and they include increasing efficiency, focus on customers, and growth.
