Estonia to wait decisions of Lithuania new parliament on NPP

Estonia's approach to nuclear energy remains pragmatic: Estonia thinks that the Visaginas nuclear power plant (NPP) could become an essential alternative, allowing to diversify energy sources and produce environmentally-friendly energy and will wait for the decisions of Lithuania's new parliament and government, says Estonian Ambassador in Lithuania Toomas Kukk.

"We believe that the Visaginas NPP is a project of great importance. Our prime minister has expressed Estonia's attitude towards it in several meetings of heads of Baltic governments. It would be a great opportunity to diversify electricity supply in our region," the ambassador said.

Kukk underlines that the final decision on Estonia's participation in the project will be made once talks are completed, when Eesti Energija sees all the terms and the project's economic viability. But before that, the ambassador says, Estonia will wait for the political decisions following the NPP referendum in Lithuania, writes LETA/ELTA.

"Just like Lithuanians we find the public opinion very important. Undoubtedly, people's opinion on the project and nuclear energy in general has to be taken into account. Now we must wait for the decisions of Lithuania's new parliament and government," Kukk said.
