Lithuania wastes 1 mn tonnes of oil equivalent biofuel annualy

Lithuania does not have enough biofuel resources to meet the energy demand in all sectors, however, the country produces 2 million tonnes of oil equivalent biofuel, says President of the Lithuanian District Heating Association Vytautas Stasiunas.

He says that the energy industry in Lithuania is made up of 6 key sectors: electricity, heat, natural gas, oil, nuclear power and renewable energy, but the energy produced from biofuel could only satisfy the heating needs, writes LETA/ELTA.

"Statistics and figures show that Lithuania annually produces around 2 million tonnes of oil equivalent biofuel. This includes timber and agriculture waster, municipal waste and straws," he said Wednesday at a news conference "Why Biofuel in Lithuanian Energy Sector is Treated Like an Orphan?" held at news agency ELTA.

In 2011, Lithuanian heat supply companies burnt around 1 million tonnes of oil equivalent biofuel. That means that another 1 million tonnes every year rots somewhere in our woods. Straws and municipal waste are not used at all," he said.

Director of the company Ekonomines Konsultacijos ir Tyrimai UAB Gintas Umbrasas is convinced that it is too dangerous to focus on a sole form of energy. He says that Lithuanians "always had something that they loved a lot": at first it was natural gas, now they have turned to the biofuel fashion.

Another problem that Umbrasas names is a falling number of energy consumers in Lithuania. He says that in the period from 1992 to 2001 the country lost around 600,000 consumers, which will be a prevailing trend in the near future as well.
