Almost two thirds, which make around 65% of Lithuanian residents, disapprove of building a new nuclear power plant (NPP) and only around 14% strongly support the project.

Around 63% think that the plant cannot be safe, while, 19% of respondents said it might be safe, writes LETA/ELTA.

During a press conference at the Seimas on Wednesday, Linas Balsys, president of the Lithuanian Green Policy Institute, presented this data when commenting on a representative poll, carried out by public opinion and market research institution Vilmorus.

People were asked whether they would agree with disposing of radioactive waste in their district.

"The residents have a very strong opinion. As much as 91.5% of Lithuanians said they would not like and would not agree with building storages for nuclear fuel waste in their district," Balsys said.

The residents were also asked if they would agree or disagree with the government rather to invest in a biofuel plant, which would produce electricity and heat, than in the NPP .

"Around 71% of the residents would prefer a biofuel plant to be built in their district to investments into an NPP," Balsys said.

The poll attempting to represent the Lithuanian residents' attitude towards nuclear power was carried out on May 3-15, 2012.
