Kubilius: after LNG terminal, Gazprom may reduce price

Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 15.05.2012.Print version
It is still hard to forecast whether Russian gas monopoly Gazprom is going to increase gas prices for Lithuania till the end of 2014, when the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal is launched, however, the company should decrease the prices after the terminal is set, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said.

"Till then [2014] it would be hard to forecast what Gazprom is going to do. They might start getting ready for the end of 2014, therefore, they might introduce more flexible prices. However, they might still want to abuse their position and Lithuania may not get lower prices," Kubilius said to the Lithuanian Radio (Lietuvos Radijas) on Tuesday, writes LETA/ELTA.

Kubilius also said that when Lithuania sets the LNG terminal and creates a competitive and transparent economic system, Gazprom would probably seek to keep their clients and would reduce the gas price.

Gazprom decided not to increase their sales in Europe in 2012, basically, due to greater competitiveness than expected in the liquefied natural gas sector and lower local market prices.
