Cutting off hot water for residents of Riga who have paid is against the law

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 17.09.2008.Print version
Suspending hot water supply for those consumers from Riga who have paid their bills regularly is a violation of the law, the Consumer Rights Protection Bureau (CRPC) announced yesterday.

In others words, a tenant, who has paid his/her bills on time and regularly, cannot be held responsible for the unpaid bills of other tenants, informs LETA.

In the case in question, the central heating utility Rigas siltums's contract is with the housing company Maju serviss KSA.

As reported, last week Rigas siltums cut off hot water supply for 37 Maju serviss KSA apartment buildings due to debt, and over 6,000 residents are without hot water.

Those who paid, must receive the service, CRPC declared, adding that the utility must find another, legal avenue to deal with the problem.
