On Monday, Estonian and Russian experts met in Tallinn to discuss the financial, economic, environmental and nuclear safety issues concerning the planned nuclear power plant in Kaliningrad, writes LETA/Delfi.ee.

Estonian experts stated that their country’s primary preference regarding regional projects on production capacities is clearly participation in the project of the new nuclear power plant in Lithuania.

On behalf of Estonia, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and of Eesti Energia took part in the meeting. On the Russian side, there were representatives of the Rosatom Group, of its partners and of the Russian embassy.

Estonian experts stated that Estonia’s general position on the potential new nuclear power plant in Kaliningrad has been formed on the basis of a number of decisions adopted on the EU level as well as in Estonia, according to which it is important to avoid increasing dependence on imported energy and that also state that it is necessary to diversify energy supply sources.

The position was explained to the Russian representatives at the meeting.

On a more technical level, it is unclear for Estonia, who or what would be the consumers of the new nuclear power plant in Kaliningrad or where would they be situated. To Estonia’s knowledge, there is no necessary infrastructure for exporting energy from Kaliningrad and there are no agreements concluded with potential consumers.

The participants in the meeting noted that the EU (including Estonia) and Russia are closely linked with each other through energy connections. Therefore a constructive and transparent dialogue in energy issues is necessary.
