Belarus' report on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of its nuclear plant is inappropriate and viewed critically, the Environment Ministry said in a statement sent to Belarus on Friday.

According to Environment Minister Gediminas Kazlauskas, Lithuania does not approve of the EIA report and the construction of the plant 50 kilometres away from Vilnius. Belarus is warned that Lithuania will defend its position actively at the international level, informs LETA/ELTA.

"We have taken all the possible measures time and again and we will also take them up in the short run to make our position heard, and our criticism and comments taken into account," Kazlauskas was quoted in the statement as saying.

The statement sent to Belarus referred to the comments by the competent authorities of Lithuania. In the document, Lithuania stresses that the Belarusian EIA report neither covers the criteria for choosing the nuclear plant's site and alternatives, nor gives the analysis of the total radiation damage in case of accidents.
