Energy Minister of Lithuania Arvydas Sekmokas says that the reform of the electricity energy sector is virtually complete as energy sector management and structural problems resulting from the dismantled LEO LT have been solved and the facilities for the effective functioning of the sector and establishment of energy independence have been set up.

The production unit, established on the basis of Lietuvos Energija, has started operating after the merger of Kaunas hydro power plant, Kruonis pump storage power plant and Lietuvos Elektrine, writes LETA/ELTA.

Transmission business has been successfully spun off and currently consists of Litgrid and Litgrid Turtas and the electricity exchange BaltPool. A joint power grid company, LESTO, is to start operating as of next year, the energy minister stressed. The Government approved the restructuring plan in May. "The reform of the system of such size and complexity is a real challenge within such a short period of time. Thus, during the process, there were continuous discussions with staff, trade unions, minority shareholders, investors, media and the public in general. We are glad that most of the audience correctly understands the goals of the process and importance of the changes," Sekmokas noted.
