The amount of electricity bought at the Estonian electricity market that was opened to competition on April 1 for large consumers has tripled in the first six months, and in September 2010, electricity bought from the electricity bourse formed 38% of the Estonian domestic consumption, LETA/Äripäev.ee reports.

While in April, the amount bought from electricity bourse was 133 GWh, in September it was 393 GWh. In six months 1.93 TWh of electric energy has been bought from the Estlink price region. Almost 40% of electricity bought in the Estonian price region moves to Latvia and Lithuania. The sold amounts have increased by 23%, from 10.3 GWh in April to 13.4 GWh in September.

The biggest problem is the low liquidity of the market, since the Estonian price region is relatively isolated, Elering said.

The six months average electricity price in the Estlink price region was 38.21 EUR/MWh. The price was cheapest in May (34.81 EUR) and most expensive in August (56.62 EUR).

The direction of movement of electricity in the Estlink1 cable has changed in six months. While in April 175 GWh moved from Estonia to Finland and 1 GW from Finland to Estonia, by the end of September the difference between the two was just 8 GWh.
