When learning the environmental impact assessment on the Baltic nuclear power plant to be established in the Kaliningrad oblast in Russia on Monday caused doubts among the members of the Riigikogu Committee on Economic Affairs whether it would be wise for Estonia to continue participating in the project of the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht writes.

“If Russians get an earlier start with the construction of the Baltic nuclear power plant, then banks won’t see Ignalina, planned to be built in the same region, as a sensible investment object,” said deputy chairman of the committee Kalev Kallo.

“The insecurity of the Lithuanian side poses a question for Estonia whether we should even consider participating in the Ignalina nuclear power plant,” said the committee’s chairman Urmas Klaas.

Russia has announced that it will start building a nearly 22,400 megawatt Baltic nuclear power plant in the Kaliningrad oblast this year. The capacity exceeds the needs of the oblast several times and the majority of the electric energy is planned to be exported to the EU.

The Russian foreign ministry asked Estonia to express an opinion about the nuclear power plant, although there is no obligation of getting such approvals connected to international agreements.

The Estonian Environment Ministry will collect the positions of Estonian institutions and organisations on the Baltic nuclear power plant environmental assessment by February 19.
